Usher’s beginnings

Early Life: Usher Raymond IV was born on October 14, 1978. Born in Texas but raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Usher’s mother Jonetta and father Usher Raymond II recognized his singing talent at an early age. They urged him to join the local church choir in Chattanooga when he was nine years old. To further his music career, the family moved to Atlanta, where Usher began recording professionally and performing as guest singers. He attended North Springs High School.

Career: After appearing on Star Search when Usher was 13, a representative from LaFace Records arranged an audition with the record label’s co-founder. Usher was signed immediately after auditioning with Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.” Usher’s mother left her job to take care of his career. As he was preparing his debut album, he was just entering puberty and was struggling to adjust his singing voice. The label put the recordings on hold and sent Usher to New York in 1994, where he lived with Puff Daddy in a “singing and coaching camp”. On August 30, 1994, Usher’s self-titled debut album was released. He was just 16 years old then. It peaked at number 25 on the Billboard charts.

Usher’s second album My Way was released in September 1997. The lead single “You Make Me Wanna…” reached #1 in the UK and became his first Gold and Platinum certified single in the US. “Nice & Slow” reached #1 in January 1998. The album was certified six times platinum. “8701”, Usher’s third album, was released in August 2001 and lead singles “U Remind Me” and “U GotIt Back” topped the Billboard Hot 100. Usher won a Grammy for Best for “U Remind Me”. male R&B vocal performance, and the following year he won the same award for U Don’t Have to Call.

Confessions brought Usher numerous awards and accolades, including three Grammy Awards.

Usher released five more albums, each with moderate to great success, but none surpassed his first four albums: Here I stood (2008), Raymond v. Raymond (2010), Looking 4 Myself), 2016’s Hard II Love, and A from 2019. In 2019 he announced he was working on Confessions II, due out in 2020.

Many of his albums debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. Five of his albums have been certified platinum by the RIAA (My Way, 8701, Confessions, Here I Stand), with Confessions selling over 10 million copies and being certified a diamond in the US. His ten number one hits include U Remind Me (8701), OMG (Raymond v. Raymond) and Yeah! (Confessions), which reached number one in nine countries and became the top-selling single of 2004 in the US. He never ceases to amaze audiences with his energetic and creative live performances. Considered by many to be an R&B legend, he has made many top lists of the greatest R&B singers of all time. He served as an inspiration and influence for a whole new generation of R&B artists.
