Born in Texas but raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Usher’s mother Jonetta and father Usher Raymond II recognized his singing talent at an early age. They urged him to join the local church choir in Chattanooga when he was nine years old. To further his music career, the family moved to Atlanta, where Usher began recording professionally and performing as guest singers. He attended North Springs High School.
Career: After appearing on Star Search when Usher was 13, a representative from LaFace Records arranged an audition with the record label’s co-founder. Usher was signed immediately after auditioning with Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.” Usher’s mother left her job to take care of his career. As he was preparing his debut album, he was just entering puberty and was struggling to adjust his singing voice. The label put the recordings on hold and sent Usher to New York in 1994, where he lived with Puff Daddy in a “singing and coaching camp”. The first single, “Yeah!” stayed at No. 1 for six weeks. Confessions brought Usher numerous awards and accolades, including three Grammy Awards.
Usher released five more albums, each with moderate to great success, but none surpassed his first four albums: Here I stood (2008), Raymond v. Raymond (2010), Looking 4 Myself), 2016’s Hard II Love, and A from 2019. In 2019 he announced he was working on Confessions II, due out in 2020.
