Virat Kohli was born on November 5, 1988 in Delhi, India. Kohli is the son of Prem Kohli and Saroj Kohli. His father was a criminal defense attorney while his mother is a homemaker.

Kohli became interested in cricket when he was a young boy. At just three years old, he picked up a cricket bat and asked his father to pass the ball to him. He received his early schooling at Vishal Bharti Public School.

In 2002, Kohli played for the Delhi U-15 side and became the leading run-getter in the 2002/03 Polly Umrigar Trophy tournament. He was named team captain for the 2003/04 Polly Umrigar Trophy.
