Hector Lavoe, one of Puerto Rico’s most famous singers, left behind a legacy that continues to live on. He had been married twice before, and both wives are still alive. However, it was his second marriage to Nilda Puchi Lavoé that produced him three kids — two sons and a daughter.

The legendary artist, who was born on May 17, 1947, died on June 28, 1993 because of complications related to HIV/AIDS. He was just 38 years old.

But what about Nilda Puchi Lavóe? She too passed away on July 21, 2002, but her death was different. Her husband Hector Lavoe did not die because of AIDS; he committed suicide. In fact, he tried to kill himself once before and failed.

He took a handful of pills, but he could not bring himself to swallow them. Instead, he drank some water and lay down on the bed. And that’s where he remained for four days, in agony. Finally, he woke up and called his mother, who rushed over immediately. When she arrived, he told her that he wanted to end his life.

His mother asked why he didn’t call anyone else, like his wife. But he replied that he needed no help. So she left him there.

On the fourth day, he became delirious and began hallucinating. He saw demons coming out of people’s mouths and heard voices calling his name. At one point, he thought that someone was trying to strangle him. Then he realized that it was actually his mother who was doing it.

When the police finally found him, he refused to go anywhere with them. They eventually convinced him to go with them by promising to take him home. But when they got to his house, he ran inside and locked the door.

However, his remains were dug up by cemetery workers and reburied in Puerto Rico alongside his wife and son. In 2008, the family of three was moved again to the Cementerio Municipal de Ponce. Héctor Martínez was born on 30 September 1946 in Pontevedra, Puerto Rico. He grew up in the barrio of Machuelo Abajo in Ponce, Puerto Rican capital. As a child, he listened to music played by his relatives; his grandmother sang folkloric ballads, while his mother accompanied her husband playing guitar. At age six, he became interested in the trumpet, but it wasn’t until he entered high school that he began taking piano lessons. He later studied composition and arranging at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.

In 1968, he moved to New York City, where he enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music. After graduating in 1972, he formed the group El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, which consisted of himself, his brother Rubén “El Gallito,” and his cousin Tito Auger. Their first album, Los Compadres de la Rumba, was recorded in 1973. In 1974, he met Carlos Santana, who invited him to join Santana & María Teresa Vera. Together, they recorded albums such as Amigos Para Siempre (1975), Tengo Ganas De Ti (1976), and Juntos En Vida (1977).

Martínez left Santana & María Teresa in 1978, and joined another band called Salsa Picante. They released one album, titled La Fiesta Continúa, in 1979.

Career of Hector Lavoe

Lavoe started his musical career in 1976, after being discovered by producer Rudy Van Gelder. He signed a contract with CBS Records and released his debut album, entitled Como un Angel Sin Palabras, in 1977. It featured songs written by Luis Enrique, José Feliciano, and Gilberto Santa Rosa. The album sold more than 1 million copies worldwide.

His second album, Entre Tus Brazos, was released in 1980. It contained hits like “Por Un Momento” and “La Cintura.” This album won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
