Early life: Tyler Gregory Okonma was born on March 6, 1991 in Ladera Heights, California near Los Angeles. His mother is of mixed African-American and European-Canadian descent. His father, whom he never met, is Nigerian. He spent most of his childhood in the Ladera Heights and Hawthorne neighborhoods of the greater Los Angeles area. As a child, he took album covers and designed his own track listings and covers. Seven years later, when he was 14, he taught himself to play the piano. During his 12 years at school, he attended 12 different schools in the Los Angeles and Sacramento area. During his high school years, Tyler the Creator worked at Starbucks and FedEx for about two years. He got the nickname Tyler the Creator from his MySpace page.
Career: Hip hop collective Odd Future was formed in 2007 by Tyler, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain and Casey Veggies. The Odd Future Tape, their first mixtape, was self-released in late 2008. On December 25, 2009, Tyler released his debut solo mixtape, Bastard. “Bastard” peaked at #32 on Pitchfork Media’s Top Albums of 2010 list. In February 2011 he released the video for his song “Yonkers”. The video immediately caused a stir and attracted the attention of several media outlets. As a result of this sudden interest, Tyler released an extended version of the video. Tyler received the 2011 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist for “Yonkers.” As Tyler’s hype grew, it brought him to the attention of music industry people including Jimmy Iovine, Rick Ross, Steve Rifkind and Jay Z. Tyler (and Odd Future) signed a deal with Sony in early 2011. In May of the same year he released his debut album “Goblin”.
Tyler appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in February 2011 to perform “Sandwitches.” It was his first television appearance. In March 2012, Tyler and Odd Future’s television show Loiter Squad premiered on Adult Swim. Produced by the production company that developed Jackass, the show was a 15-minute live-action show that included pranks, Man on the Street segments, skits and music. The show ran for three seasons.
Tyler released the first single “Domo23” from his second album “Wolf” on Valentine’s Day 2013. On the same day, Tyler appeared again on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and performed two songs. In March and April 2013, Tyler embarked on a tour of Europe and North America. “Wolf” was released in early April 2013.
In April 2013, the video for Tyler’s song “Fucking Young” was released on Odd Future’s YouTube channel. The song is featured on Tyler’s 2015 album Cherry Bomb. Tyler performed at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in 2015 and from there embarked on a world tour of North America, Europe and Asia through September 2015.
In the summer of 2017, Tyler released his fourth album, Flower Boy. The album was supported by the singles “Boredom” and “I Ain’t Got Time!” and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Kendrick Lamar won that year for Damn.
In May 2019, Tyler released his fifth studio album, Igor. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Igor was Tyler’s first number one album in the US and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Tyler also hosts the annual Camp Flog Gnaw Festival at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The music festival has been held every year since autumn 2012. The festival features a range of hip-hop and R&B acts, as well as rides and games. Past Camp Flog Gnaw Festivals have featured Lil Wayne, Mac Miller, Pharrell Williams, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, Willow Smith, Chance the Rapper, Post Malone, Drake, Solange, Juice WRLD and Billie Eilish.

Tyler launched his line of clothing, GOLF WANG, a nod to Wolf Gang, a phrase frequently used in Tyler’s early music.
