Mark Mateschitz is one of the richest people in the world. He inherited his considerable fortune from his father Dietrich Mateschitz, who died in October 2022. As the founder of Red Bull GmbH, he became the richest Austrian. Since his death, his son Mark has held the 49 percent of the company that belonged to him. Mark Mateschitz’s estimated fortune is 32.48 billion euros, making him the richest Austrian .

Mark Mateschitz’s net worth

Mark Mateschitz is the heir to Dietrich Mateschitz , who founded Red Bull GmbH in 1984 and was at one point one of the 100 richest people in the world. He left his 49 percent share in the company to his son.

Illegitimate son of a billionaire

Mark Mateschitz was born Mark Dietrich Gerhardter as he was given his mother Anita Gerhardter’s surname. She had a relationship with Dietrich Mateschitz for around two years, but was never married to him. Mark, the product of the relationship, grew up with his mother, who worked as a stewardess and a ski instructor. When he was eleven years old, his father founded a private foundation with which he wanted to provide financial security for his son. According to Mateschitz senior, Mark was only allowed to use the foundation and the money in it from his 24th birthday. However, this was subject to the conditions that he must not have a criminal record or be a drug addict.

Studies and name change

However, in 2010, shortly after Mark’s 18th birthday, Dietrich Mateschitz dissolved the foundation and instead transferred half of the shares in Dietrich Mateschitz Verwaltungs OG to his son. Mark graduated from high school in 2011 at the Werkschulheim Felbertal, a private high school in Ebenau in the Austrian state of Salzburg. He then enrolled to study business administration at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. Between 2017 and 2021 he had his name officially changed to Mark Dietrich Mateschitz .

Entry into the father’s company network

In August 2017 he became managing director of Thalheimer Heilwasser GmbH, which produces Thalheim Beer, the only beer brewed with healing water in Austria. Mateschitz placed the drink in restaurants and supermarkets, but withdrew from management in April 2022. In July 2021, he took over the management of Mark Mateschitz Beteiligungs GmbH, which took over shares in the real estate company deaurea a few months later. This in turn is one of the many companies that belong to the Red Bull network.

At the beginning of 2022 he took a position on the board of Wings for Life. The foundation, which is run by his mother Anita Gerhardter, is committed to curing paraplegia. In addition, his father increasingly involved him in his company. He headed the Organics by Red Bull division, which is responsible for the production of organic soft drinks.

Heir and billionaire

When Dietrich Mateschitz died in October 2022, it was initially unclear what would happen to his 49 percent stake in Red Bull GmbH. According to media reports, Mateschitz’s Thai business partner Chalerm Yoovidhya had a say in the matter as he owns the remaining 51 percent of the company. In November 2022 it became known that Mateschitz was taking over his father’s company shares and thus also his huge fortune, but was handing over management of Organics by Red Bull. In the Bloomberg Billionaires Index of 2023, Mateschitz is listed among the top 100 and is now the richest Austrian.
