EDMUND DÉDÉ (1827-1903)
New Orleans, Louisiana was the birthplace of composer and musician Edmund Dédé on November 20, 1827. The Creoles who raised him were free Creoles of color who immigrated to New Orleans from the French West Indies around 1809. A bandmaster for a local military group, Dédé’s father taught him music for the first time.
In addition to graduating from Ludovico Gabici’s theater orchestra conductor school, Dédé also studied with Christian Debergue’s New Orleans Free Creoles of Color Philharmonic Society conductor school. In New Orleans, Dédé studied technique under Eugene Prevost, a French-born pianist and conductor at the Theater d’Orleans who won the Prix de Rome in 1831, and Charles Richard Lambert, a free black musician, teacher, and conductor from New York who had moved to Louisiana.
Following the end of the Mexican-American War, many free Creoles of color fled New Orleans to Mexico, including Dédé. The oldest piece of sheet music published by a free Creole of color in New Orleans is “Mon Pauvre Coeur” (My Poor Heart) composed in 1851.
Working as a cigar maker enabled Dédé to pursue his musical education in Europe. His first musical studies were at the Paris Conservatory in 1857. His next position was as conductor of the L’Alcazar orchestra in Bordeaux. In the United States, Dédé experienced less racial prejudice than he did in France because of good trade relations between Bordeaux and Louisiana.
More than 250 dances and songs were composed by Dédé during her years in Bordeaux, including ballets, operettas, opera-comiques, and overtures. In the National Library of France in Paris, the vast majority of the surviving copies of Dédé’s works date from this period in his life. Despite Dédé’s great popularity in France, a New Orleans orchestra performed Quasimodo Symphony in 1865, making it a rare American performance.
Sylvie Leflat, a French woman of high social standing, married Dédé in 1864. In addition to becoming a composer and musician, Eugene Arcade Dédé was also the son of the two.
A bad weather event forced Dédé’s ship to dock near Galveston for two months in 1893, and he lost his prized Cremona violin. Until 1894, he traveled around the country giving violin concerts in cities across the country. It was in Paris that he died in 1903, after returning there in 1894.
