He is considered one of the most gifted athletes of all time and one of the few to excel in two professional sports at the same time. He is the only person in history to have played in both a World Series and a Super Bowl.

When combined with NFL and MLB salaries, Deion earned nearly $60 million in contract money alone. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $93 million. He also earned tens of millions of dollars from endorsement deals.

Deion Luwynn Sanders Sr. was born on August 9, 1967 in Fort Myers, Florida. He attended North Fort Myers High School and was honored with All-State honors in football, basketball and baseball. Deion was named to the Florida High School Association All-Century team in 1985, which consists of the top 33 players in Florida’s 100-year history of high school football. That same year, the Kansas City Royals selected him for the Major League Baseball draft, but he turned it down.

He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons and played football primarily as a cornerback. He played for the Atlanta Falcons, the San Francisco 49ers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins (his most expensive contract was $56 million and 7 years) and the Baltimore Ravens, holding several positions such as cornerback but also occasionally as a wide Receiver, kick returner and punt returner played. Deion played 14 seasons in the NFL and won two Super Bowl titles, XXIX with the 49ers and XXX with the Cowboys. He also played in nine Pro Bowls and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Sanders played part-time as a pro baseball player for nine years. In July 1988, he signed with the Yankees but left to attend NFL training camp instead. Three days after signing a $4.4 million contract, Dion ran his first punt for a point, becoming the only athlete to play in hit a touchdown and a home run that same week. Over the course of his nearly decade-long playing career, Deion played on a number of teams, starting with the New York Yankees before being fired after just one season. He starred in the 2008 reality show Deion & Pilar: Prime Time Love, which centered on the couple and their five children while they lived in Prosper, Texas. He also works as a volunteer football coach at his sons’ school, Trinity Christian School Cedar Hill. In 2012, Sanders founded Prime Prep Academy Charter School, but it closed in 2015 for financial and legal reasons. From 2014-2015 he starred in Deion’s Family Playbook, a reality show on the Oprah Network about his family life. After retiring from both sports, he began working as a studio analyst for both the NFL Network on Sundays and CBS Sports on Thursdays only.

In 2005, Sanders called on all professional athletes from all four major sports to donate $1,000 to Hurricane Katrina relief, with a goal of raising between $1.5 million and $3 million.
