While Bills safety Damar Hamlin is on the mend following his cardiac arrest, the question arises as to what will happen to his contract. Meanwhile, his team apparently already has a plan – and is showing heart in it.
The sporting future of Damar Hamlin, who collapsed during the NFL game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals during the week, remains uncertain after the incident.
While the Bills’ safety is on the mend and has now made his first public statement via Twitter , the question arises as to how the franchise is handling the player’s contract.
Hamlin’s salary is not fully guaranteed
The fact is: Hamlin was given a four-year contract worth $3.64 million by the Bills. Buffalo’s sixth-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft is in his second season – so he still has two years left on his contract with the Bills.
Since it is unclear whether Hamlin will play for the franchise again, it is also unclear what will happen to his contract. Because the full $3.64 million – of which around two million are still left – is not guaranteed.
Bills with a nice gesture
The 24-year-old has a clause in his contract that stipulates that Hamlin will receive less money if he is placed on the Injured Reserve List (IR). The Bills have now placed the safety on IR due to the incident – meaning Hamlin would not earn full salary due to the clause.
Hamlin receives full salary
Accordingly, Hamlin would normally have earned $825,000 in 2022. The rate if he is on IR would have been just $455,000. For Week 18 of the NFL, that means he will earn the full $45,833 instead of $25,277, according to Spotrac, even though he is not on the Bills’ active roster but on IR.
According to Rapoport , the safety will apparently watch the next game of his Buffalo Bills against the New England Patriots from the hospital bed at the University of Cinciannti Medical Center.
