Angus Barn in Raleigh, North Caroline is a family tradition that local residents reserve at least one year in advance to ensure they get to continue their traditions. This year, the Angus Barn celebrated its 10th anniversary, and it is still going strong.
The Angus Barn is an upscale steakhouse located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. With a barn-like setting, guests enjoy an intimate dining experience surrounded by rustic décor. The menu features classic American cuisine, including steaks, chops, seafood, pasta dishes, and salads.
Guests have the opportunity of enjoying a unique dining experience along with access into an extensive wine cellar, cigars, and lounge areas. There is even a special area for kids called “Kidz Nite Out,” complete with toys and games.
And by festive, I mean over-the-top Christmas decorations you will ever see in a restaurant. From the tree to the wreaths, everything about the Angus Barn is decorated beautifully.
History of The Angus Barn
The Beginning
In 1960, Thad Euern, Jr., and Charles Winston bought 50 acres of land on North Carolina Highway 70 in Raleigh. Their plan was to open a restaurant called The Angus Barn. They wanted to serve American food with a British twist, like what they enjoyed while living in London.
To set up the restaurant, the couple estimated it would cost approximately 200,000 dollars. Banks weren’t interested in lending money to start a restaurant, so they turned to family members and friends.
They raised enough capital to make the down payment on the property, and began construction.
When the restaurant opened in 1962, it was a huge success. But, it wasn’t long before the owners realized there was a problem. There just weren’t enough customers coming into the restaurant.
So, they came up with a solution. They added a second floor to the building. This allowed them to expand their seating capacity from 275 to 500 people.
But, even though the restaurant grew, the bank still wouldn’t lend them any more money. So, the owners took out a loan themselves, and paid off the original mortgage.
Up and Running
The owners of the restaurant had been planning to open their doors for the first time ever on New Year’s Eve. They knew they needed help. So they hired a team of people who had never worked in a restaurant before. But they didn’t know what they were getting into.
They quickly realized there was no manual for running a successful restaurant. And they couldn’t find anyone willing to teach them. So they began learning everything about the industry themselves.
After six months of training, they opened their doors on January 7th, 1960. Their first customer came in just over one hour later. By the end of the evening, the place was packed.
From that day forward, they learned how to run a restaurant. And they’ve been doing it successfully ever since.

The Current Owners of The Angus Barn
Van Eure owns The Angus Barn with her husband, Bill. They bought the restaurant in 1995 and opened it in 1996. When asked about how much she loves owning and operating The Angus Barn, Van Eure says, “I love it because I know every single person who works here.”
She goes on to say that she hires people based on their personalities and skills rather than experience. She believes that the best way to find out what someone is capable of doing is to ask them questions. For example, she asks each potential employee to write down three things they want to do in life. Then, she gives them jobs where they are able to use those talents.
This approach has worked well for Van Eure because she trusts her employees to make good decisions. In fact, she doesn’t even check up on them very often. Instead, she relies on them to tell her if something isn’t working. She explains, “If you’re honest with me, I’ll be honest with you.”
The Angus Barn Holiday Traditions
Angus Barn is known for its delicious food and drinks, and it’s even been named one of Britain’s best pubs. But there are many things about the pub that people don’t know. For example, did you know that the pub is decorated for Christmas every December? And what about the Gingerbread Men? They aren’t just for kids anymore. You might find yourself being handed one by an elf. Angus Barn Dress Code Policy 2021
Holiday Reservations
The holidays are upon us, and it’s time to start thinking about booking reservations at restaurants. But finding a table at one of New York City’s many fine dining establishments can be difficult.
But there’s hope. If you book early enough, you might just find yourself seated at The Angus Barn for dinner. At least that’s what happened to our reporter, who managed to secure a reservation at the restaurant on Dec. 3.
We called ahead to see if we could reserve a table for Christmas Day, and the person answering the phone told us that they didn’t take reservations for Christmas Day. So we asked how long they took reservations for, and she replied, “Well, we don’t really do that.”
So we asked her why they didn’t offer Christmas day reservations, and she responded, “Because people usually want to come in late because they’re tired from shopping.”
She went on to say that they don’t take reservations on Christmas Day because they don’t want to disappoint anyone. She added, “I mean, we’d love to help out, but we don’t take Christmas reservations.”
When we pressed further, asking whether or not they ever had taken reservations for Christmas Day, she answered, “No, never.”
This prompted me to ask, “Why don’t you take reservations for Christmas Day? Is it because you don’t want people to show up?”

The Meat locker
In the early 2000s, there was no shortage of places to smoke in Charlotte. There were plenty of bars and lounges where people could light up indoors. But what about those times when you wanted to enjoy a cigar while dining al fresco? Well, there weren’t many options. Until now.
In 2009, The Angus Barn opened on South Boulevard, offering diners a place to enjoy fine cuisine while puffing away on a stogie. “We knew we needed to offer something different,” says co-owner Chris Van. “And we didn’t want it to be just another bar.”
Van and his partners immediately set about transforming the former refrigeration unit into an outdoor smoking lounge complete with a full menu of appetizers and drinks. And since opening day, the restaurant has become a favorite among smokers and nonsmokers alike.
The Angus Barn Wine Cellar
The Wine Cellar is operated much like a separate restaurant, complete with its own chef, private staff, and a fully functional kitchen. It has two dining rooms, one with a fireplace, and another with a view of the garden. Both of them have a private bar with full service. The wine cellar rooms are named after the people who originally owned it, and each room has its own wine menu. The wine type is divided into regions and takes 82 pages to describe every single bottle.
Wine Cellar Tours
The Wine Cellar is one of the most exclusive restaurants in New York City. Located inside the Four Seasons Hotel, it offers guests an experience unlike anything else in Manhattan. Guests are treated like royalty as they descend into the basement of the hotel to explore the world-class collection of wines housed within.
To get a tour of the wine cellar, you have to walk through the winding staircase that leads directly to the dining room. As you make your way down the stairs, you come across the walls decorated with the Wine Spectator magazine’s Grand Award winners. There are over 200 trophies hanging up.
On the way, you come upon the kitchen where chefs prepare meals for the restaurant upstairs. You pass by the pantry, the refrigerator, and even the freezer. You see the entire operation from start to finish.
You end up in the main tasting room. Here, you find yourself surrounded by some of the best wines in the world. The space itself is breathtaking. The ceilings are high and there are glass windows overlooking Central Park.
After exploring the cellar, you return to the main floor of the restaurant. You’re greeted by the chef and his team, who take you out to dinner.

The Angus Barn Bathrooms
I’m sure you’ve heard of The Angus Barn. They’re one of those places where people go to eat and drink and just hang out. You know, it’s sort of like a restaurant/bar hybrid. But what most people don’t realize is that there are actually some pretty cool things about The Angus Barn besides the food and drinks. For example, did you know that they have amazing bathrooms?!
These bathrooms are like a format lounging room from the Renaissance Period. There’s a lot of marble, ornate fixtures, and even a fireplace. And while the bathrooms aren’t open to the public, my family and I had the opportunity to check them out before we went into the dining area. We took pictures and wrote down everything we noticed. So let me tell you about the best parts of The Angus Barn’s bathrooms…

3. Ornate Fixtures
4. An Entranceway With A Curtain
5. A Large Mirror On The Wall

O’Brien explains that the restaurant wants to encourage people to dress up, and he believes that this will help draw more attention to the food. He adds that there is no specific dress code for the Wild Turkey Lounge, where patrons can enjoy a drink while watching sports games.
