Steve Perry Net Worth: Steve Perry is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who has a net worth of $60 million. Perry is best known as the lead singer of the band Journey . Outside of Journey , Steve Perry has enjoyed a successful solo career and has become known in the music world for his phenomenal voice.
Early Life: Stephen Ray Perry was born on January 22, 1949 in Hanford, California. Raised by Portuguese parents, Steve Perry was exposed to music at a young age through his father’s singing career. Steve’s father was also a co-owner of a local radio station. His parents separated when he was 8 years old and he moved to his grandparents’ farm. At the age of 12 he heard Sam Cooke sing “Cupid” on the radio and immediately wanted to be a singer.
As a teenager, Steve Perry attended high school in Lemoore, California. During his high school years, Perry became very involved in music. He joined the marching band and a number of bands outside of school with fellow students. After graduating high school, Perry attended the College of the Sequoias and sang in the choir as a tenor.
Beginning of Career: Steve Perry began pursuing his music career seriously in his early 20s when he hooked up with 16-year-old Scott Mathews (who later became a music producer). Mathews played the drums and guitar while Perry sang most of the songs. Things were looking promising for the band they called Ice . Although they recorded many of their tracks, they found no management and no one heard their recordings.
Another attempt to break through failed when Steve Perry joined a progressive rock band called Pieces . Again, the band failed to get the crucial record deal. Perry didn’t give up, however, and joined the band Alien Project in his mid-20s . When the band’s bassist died in a car accident, Perry took it as a sign that he should quit music and returned to his childhood home in Lemoore.
Journey: Although Steve Perry decided to give up his dream of being a singer, his mother convinced him to answer to a band called Journey who had previously contacted him. The San Francisco band was struggling to break out and were mesmerized by Perry’s voice after hearing an Alien Project recording. He eventually replaced the band’s lead singer and made his first appearance on Infinity, their 1978 album.
When Steve Perry joined Journey , he changed their style drastically. Previously , Journey was a progressive rock band. Perry gave the band a pop edge, and many fans (and band members) were initially unsure about this new direction. However, the result was not objectionable. This new pop sound was the reason Journey was first played on the radio.
Perry would later provide vocals for many of Journey’s albums, including Evolution , Departure, Dream After Dream, Captured, Escape, Frontiers, Raised on Radio, and Trial by Fire. During this time, “Open Arms” became a particularly impressive hit single, peaking at number two on the charts.
Though primarily involved with Journey , Perry also found time to collaborate with artists such as Sammy Hagar and Kenny Loggins. He also released Street Talk , his first solo album in 1984. The album sold over 2 million copies and featured hits like “Oh Sherrie.” After the release of his solo album, Steve Perry was not involved with Journey for a number of years . When he returned in 1986, his mother became ill. The recording process for Raised on Radio was difficult because Perry had to be constantly away to visit his mother. After this draining emotional and creative process, Journey disbanded in 1987.
Aside from a few live performances here and there, Perry disappeared from the scene for the next seven years. It wasn’t until 1994 that he resurfaced with another solo album, For the Love of Strange Medicine . He accompanied the album with a tour, which was quite successful. With Journey he put another album in 1996 – Trial by Fire. The album was a clear hit and went platinum within a year. But tragedy soon struck. Perry was badly injured while hiking and his hip had to be replaced. However, Perry was reluctant to undergo surgery. Meanwhile, his bandmates wanted to capitalize on the success of their newly released platinum album. Eventually, they pressured Perry into getting the surgery, to which he refused and finally left Journey in 1998 .
Despite his initial refusal to have surgery, Perry later in 1998 decided to have the procedure of his own accord. He later explained that he never really felt accepted by the band. Over the next few years, Perry worked with artists such as Jeff Golub and David Pack. Although he rarely performed on stage during this period, he eventually released his third solo album, Traces . The 2018 album also spawned a music video in 2019 – Perry’s first in 25 years. In 2019 he also released a three-part holiday EP.
Musical style and influences: Perry has been praised more than once for his voice. It has incredible range and can deliver powerful notes with excellent tone. Rolling Stone ranks Steve Perry among the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Although Steve Perry has considerable technical ability, he also sings with genuine passion.
Perry was primarily influenced by Sam Cooke. But he was also inspired by the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin. Apart from his vocal influences, Perry’s personal taste in music is based on the style of Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley.
Also, Steve Perry is an accomplished songwriter. During his time with Journey, he wrote most of their songs. He also wrote almost all of his solo songs. Because of this, he was nominated for induction into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2020.
