Brian McKnight is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer who has a net worth of $10 million. Brian McKnight is best known for his falsetto voice and wide range. He has received numerous Grammy Award nominations throughout his career. McKnight also appeared in episodes of the television series Sister, Sister and starred in the 2009 comedy film Black Dynamite.

His 1992 self-titled debut album sold over 1 million copies. Between 1995 and 2017, McKnight released 12 more studio albums. His most successful album to date is 1999’s Back at One, which sold over 3 million copies worldwide. In total, Brian has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.

Financial Trouble: In February 2014, it was revealed that Brian McKnight was the victim of a large-scale scam at the hands of his former accountant. McKnight is suing the former employee for not paying his taxes for more than 10 straight years, piling up $1.5 million in back taxes and penalties. Because of these financial problems, Brian claimed at the time that his bank had placed a lien on his house and the IRS had frozen his royalty payments. Also, Brian’s driver’s license was revoked for not paying taxes.

Early Life and Career Beginnings: Brian McKnight was born in Buffalo, New York in 1969 to Claude McKnight Jr. and Ruth Elaine Willis. He began singing in the church choir as a child and played in an a cappella gospel quartet with his brothers. McKnight attended Oakwood College, a Seventh-day Adventist university in Huntsville, Alabama. In his sophomore year, he was expelled from school after violating dorm room visitor rules.

Inspired by his older brother Claude and his band Take 6, McKnight began selling demo tapes as a teenager. At the age of 19 he signed his first recording contract with Wing Records, a subsidiary of Mercury Records. In 1992, McKnight released his self-titled debut album. With the ballad and Top 20 single “One Last Cry,” the album peaked at #58 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Anytime Success: McKnight followed his debut with the albums I Remember You (1995) and Anytime (1997). The latter, McKnight’s third and final album with Mercury, featured contributions from Sean Combs, Keith Thomas and songwriter Diane Warren. Although it received mixed reviews upon its release, it made the top 20 on the Billboard 200, sold over two million copies, and became McKnight’s first album to top the R&B/Hip-Hop album charts. It also spawned many singles, including “You Should Be Mine (Don’t Waste Your Time)”, a Top 20 hit, and the title track “Anytime”, which became one of the most played radio songs of 1998. McKnight received a Grammy Award nomination for the track.

Motown Records: After leaving Mercury in 1998, McKnight signed with Motown and released the Christmas album Bethlehem. This was followed by Back at One, which sold more than three million copies and became his most successful album to date. Mixing hip-hop, ballads and contemporary R&B, it spawned the singles “Stay or Let it Go”, “Win” and the title track “Back at One”. The latter peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming McKnight’s best-selling single. The album itself was nominated for Best R&B Album at the Grammy Awards.

McKnight’s next album was 2001’s Superhero, which debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200. The album’s singles, “Love of My Life” and “Still,” were nominated for a Grammy. In 2003, McKnight released his seventh studio album, U Turn, which also peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200, while the lead single, “Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda,” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Finally, in 2005, McKnight released his final album with Motown, Gemini. It reached number four on the charts, making it the singer’s most successful album to date.

Warner Brothers and E1 Music: Later in 2005, McKnight signed with Warner Bros. Records. He then released Ten, his only album on the label. Ten spawned the singles “Used to Be My Girl”, “What’s My Name” and “Find Myself in You”, which were originally featured on the soundtrack to the Tyler Perry film Madea’s Family Reunion. From 2009 to 2013, McKnight released three albums with E1 Music: Evolution of Man, Just Me and More Than Words, which also featured Colbie Caillat and McKnight’s two sons.

Television and radio career: On radio, McKnight hosted “The Brian McKnight Morning Show” from 2006 to 2010, which aired on KTWV The Wave in Los Angeles. On television, the singer has appeared as himself on episodes of Beverly Hills 90210, Martin, Living Single and My Wife and Kids. He played various characters in a few episodes of Sister, Sister in the late ’90s and took part in the second season of The Celebrity Apprentice in 2009.

Later Albums: In 2016, McKnight released his 14th studio album, Better, on his own label; it spawned the singles “Uh Oh Feeling” and “Better.” Also that year, McKnight released An Evening With, a live CD, DVD and Blu-ray collection made in collaboration with SoNo Recording Group. The collection contained 14 songs performed live, as well as three rewritten and recorded tracks. The lead single “Everything” reached the top 20 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Again collaborating with the independent SoNo Recording Group, McKnight released his 2017 album Genesis, which spawned the hit singles “Forever” and “I Want U.” 2020 was followed by Exodus, which McKnight says will be his last project to feature only original material.

Personal Life: In 1990, Brian McKnight married his college sweetheart, singer-songwriter Julie McKnight. They had two children, Niko and Brian Jr., and divorced in 2003. Later, in 2014, McKnight dated Dr. Leilani dating Malia Mendoza, whom he married in 2017.

Raised among Seventh-day Adventists, religion was central to McKnight and his family. His grandfather was a pastor at the church, and his mother sang in a gospel choir and played the piano at the Emanuel Temple in Buffalo. McKnight has also made a name for himself in the African American community and has been nominated multiple times for the NAACP Image Awards.

Back at one lyrics

It’s undeniableThat we should be togetherIt’s unbelievableHow I used to say, that I’d fall neverThe basis is need to knowIf you don’t know just how I feelThen let me show you now that I’m, for realIf all things in time, time will reveal(Yeah, yeah)
One, you’re like a dream come trueTwo, just wanna be with youThree, girl, It’s plain to seeThat you’re the only one for me, and
Four, repeat steps one through threeFive, make you fall in love with meIf ever I believe my work is doneThen I’ll start back at one(Yeah, yeah)
It’s so incredibleThe way things work themselves outAnd all emotionalOnce you know what it’s all about (hey)
And undesirableFor us to be apartNever would’ve made it very far‘Cause you know, you’ve got the keys to my heart, ’cause
One, you’re like a dream come trueTwo, just wanna be with youThree, girl, It’s plain to seeThat you’re the only one for me, and
Four, repeat steps one through threeFive, make you fall in love with meIf ever I believe my work is doneThen I’ll start back at one
Say farewell to the dark of nightI see the comin’ of the sunI feel like a little child, whose life has just begunYou came and breathed new lifeInto this lonely heart of mineYou threw out the lifelineJust in the nick of time
One, you’re like a dream come trueTwo, just wanna be with youThree, girl, It’s plain to seeThat you’re the only one for me, and
Four, repeat steps one through threeFive, make you fall in love with meIf ever I believe my work is doneThen I’ll start back at one
